Carwash Cenote, known locally as Aktun Ha, is a charming open-air cenote that has become one of the most popular training and recreational diving sites in the Tulum area due to its gentle conditions, beautiful lily pad coverage, and diverse freshwater marine life. The name Carwash originates from the early days when local taxi drivers used the cenote's clean freshwater to wash their vehicles, though today it is a protected natural site that offers a unique diving experience quite different from the dramatic cavern cenotes found elsewhere in the region. The cenote features a large open pool covered with a carpet of water lilies whose roots create a beautiful underwater canopy that filters sunlight into dappled patterns across the sandy bottom below. This natural lily pad ceiling is one of the cenote's most distinctive features, creating an atmospheric diving environment that feels like swimming beneath a floating garden. The shallow depth rarely exceeding twelve meters makes Carwash an excellent training site where new divers can practice skills in calm freshwater conditions without the surge, salt, or currents found in ocean environments. "Enter the water from the concrete platform at the edge of the cenote and descend into the warm freshwater beneath the beautiful lily pad canopy that covers much of the surface. Swim beneath the floating lily pads where their roots create an intricate underwater garden with shafts of sunlight filtering through the leaves creating beautiful dappled light patterns on the sandy bottom below. The shallow depth of approximately four to six meters in the main pool allows you to explore the lily pad root system in detail, observing the small freshwater fish, juvenile tarpon, and invertebrates that find shelter among the hanging roots. Navigate toward the deeper section where the cenote opens into a larger chamber with depths reaching approximately ten to twelve meters, where the lily pad coverage thins and more direct light penetrates to illuminate the limestone walls and sandy bottom. Catfish can be observed foraging along the substrate while freshwater turtles occasionally cruise through the open water between the lily pad zones. The optional cavern section extends from the main pool into a decorated passage with stalactites and flowstone formations for divers seeking additional exploration. Return to the entry point through the lily pad garden enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and gentle conditions before ascending to the platform."
