Dos Ojos, meaning "two eyes" in Spanish, is arguably the most famous cenote dive in the world and serves as the gateway to the vast Sac Actun underwater cave system, one of the longest explored cave passages on Earth. The name refers to the two adjacent circular sinkholes that form the entrance to an extensive network of flooded caverns and passages decorated with millions of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations created over hundreds of thousands of years. The cavern diving experience at Dos Ojos follows well-defined routes through massive chambers adorned with spectacular speleothems, past crystal-clear halocline layers where freshwater meets denser saltwater, and through cathedral-like spaces where torch light illuminates formations that resemble the interior of a gothic cathedral. The water clarity is extraordinary with visibility often exceeding one hundred meters in the freshwater lens, creating an almost surreal flying sensation as you glide through the vast chambers. The system connects to dozens of other cenotes through passages that extend for hundreds of kilometers, though cavern diving routes remain within sight of natural light and are suitable for recreational divers with cavern certification. "Enter the water from the wooden platform at the edge of the first eye cenote and descend into the crystal-clear freshwater where visibility extends seemingly without limit through the vast cavern chamber. Follow your guide along the marked route through the main cavern where massive stalactites hang from the ceiling like stone chandeliers and columns rise from the floor where stalactites and stalagmites have joined over millennia. The route passes through a series of interconnected chambers with varying ceiling heights, some reaching over ten meters with dramatic formations illuminated by your torch beam. At approximately twelve meters you will encounter the halocline where freshwater meets saltwater, creating a visible shimmering layer that distorts light and requires careful buoyancy management to pass through smoothly. Continue into the second eye chamber where natural light from above filters through the water creating ethereal blue-green illumination across the limestone formations. The return route follows a different passage back to the entry point, allowing you to observe different formations and perspectives of the cavern system. Ascend slowly to the platform while observing the stunning light effects created by the sun penetrating the cavern entrance from above."
