Site Overview

Islas Marietas National Park is a protected volcanic archipelago off the coast of Nayarit featuring diverse coral reef ecosystems, sea turtle encounters, and the famous Hidden Beach that has become one of Mexico's most photographed natural attractions, combining world-class snorkeling and diving with stunning geological formations. The two main islands and surrounding islets create a protected marine environment where coral communities thrive on the volcanic rock substrate supporting diverse tropical fish populations including colourful damselfish, angelfish, and parrotfish. Green sea turtles are regular visitors during the warmer months, feeding on the reef algae and allowing divers to observe these gentle creatures at close range. Eagle rays cruise the sandy channels between reef formations while moray eels occupy the numerous crevices and caverns in the volcanic rock. The underwater topography features dramatic arches, swim-throughs, and small caverns carved by wave action into the volcanic rock, creating an exciting three-dimensional diving environment that appeals to all experience levels. The famous Hidden Beach, accessible only through a tunnel at low tide, has brought international attention to the islands, though diving and snorkeling access to the surrounding reefs remains well-managed through permit systems that protect the fragile coral ecosystems. Water temperatures of 22-29°C and mild currents make Islas Marietas accessible year-round for divers and snorkelers of all levels.
