Los Islotes Sea Lion Colony – La Paz & Espíritu Santo

Site Overview

Los Islotes is a colony of approximately 400 California sea lions living among dramatic volcanic rock islets near the northern end of Espíritu Santo Island, offering one of the world's most interactive marine mammal diving experiences where curious sea lions actively seek out divers for playful encounters. The juvenile sea lions are famously inquisitive, approaching divers within centimetres, tugging at fins, performing barrel rolls, and playing games of chase that create unforgettable underwater moments and extraordinary photographic opportunities. The volcanic rock formations themselves are spectacular, with arches, swim-throughs, and caverns carved by millennia of wave action creating a dramatic underwater playground that extends from the surface to 20 metres depth. King angelfish, Cortez rainbow wrasses, and diverse reef fish add constant colour to the rocky reef while moray eels patrol the crevices between boulders. The colony is divided between a haul-out area where sea lions rest on the rocks and the active underwater zone where they hunt and play. Humpback whales can sometimes be heard singing during winter months while passing through the Espíritu Santo channel. The site is accessible for both scuba divers and snorkelers, with snorkelers often having equally rewarding encounters in the shallower areas where juvenile sea lions are most active. This combination of guaranteed marine mammal interaction, dramatic geology, and accessibility makes Los Islotes one of the Sea of Cortez's signature dive experiences and a highlight of every Baja diving trip.
