Site Overview

Morros de Potosí is the premier dive site off Isla Ixtapa featuring dramatic rock pinnacles adorned with colourful gorgonian sea fans, schooling snapper, green sea turtles, and occasional whale shark visits during the winter months that make it one of the most rewarding dive destinations on the Guerrero Pacific coast. The volcanic rock formations create varied underwater topography with pinnacles and walls descending from the surface to 25 metres, covered in dense gorgonian sea fan colonies that extend their polyps into the gentle Pacific currents creating beautiful underwater gardens. Schools of snapper and other reef fish patrol the pinnacle formations in constant motion, providing dynamic wide-angle photography subjects against the colourful sea fan backdrops. Green sea turtles are regular visitors during the warmer months, gliding gracefully along the walls while feeding on algae and invertebrates growing on the rocky substrate. Moray eels occupy numerous crevices throughout the pinnacle formations with multiple species present including green morays and spotted morays. During the winter months from November through March, whale sharks occasionally pass through the nutrient-rich waters near Isla Ixtapa, providing exciting surface encounters for alert divers during transit between dive sites. The site's proximity to the Ixtapa hotel zone, just a 15-minute boat ride, makes it highly accessible for resort-based divers seeking quality diving without extensive travel logistics. The moderate depth profile and mild conditions accommodate divers of various experience levels, with beginners exploring the shallower pinnacle tops while intermediate divers work the deeper walls where the largest sea fans and most diverse marine life are found.
