Site Overview

San Benedicto Island's El Boiler is one of the world's most famous manta ray cleaning stations where giant Pacific mantas with wingspans reaching 6 metres hover motionless above the volcanic pinnacle while small cleaner fish remove parasites in an extraordinary symbiotic relationship that divers can witness from just metres away. The site gets its name from the boiling-water appearance created by the massive manta wings churning the surface as they queue for cleaning services at the shallow pinnacle top. During the peak season from November through May, multiple mantas visit the cleaning station daily, with some individuals spending over 30 minutes hovering above the pinnacle while cleaner wrasses and other small fish attend to their skin, gills, and mouth cavities. The mantas at El Boiler are remarkably tolerant of divers, often passing directly overhead with their enormous wings creating powerful downdrafts that divers must manage with proper weighting and finning technique. Beyond the mantas, bottlenose dolphins regularly visit the pinnacle, performing acrobatic displays and occasionally interacting with divers through curious approaches and bubble-ring games. Silky sharks patrol the deeper slopes while hammerheads occasionally pass through the blue water. The volcanic island setting adds dramatic above-water scenery with steam vents and stark volcanic geology visible during surface intervals. The crystal-clear oceanic visibility of 20-40 metres provides perfect conditions for observing and photographing the manta cleaning behaviour in extraordinary detail. El Boiler is universally considered one of the top manta ray diving experiences on the planet, drawing photographers and marine enthusiasts from around the world for the chance to witness these gentle giants at their most intimate cleaning interactions.
