Site Overview

Cream Gardens is one of the most colourful and accessible dive sites at the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, featuring extensive soft coral gardens that create a living tapestry of cream, orange, purple, and white across the rocky reef slopes. The site is named for the dominant cream-coloured soft corals that cover the reef in such density that the underwater landscape resembles a carefully tended garden. Ecklonia kelp fronds sway in the mild current alongside the soft corals, creating a multi-layered habitat that supports an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Nudibranchs are exceptionally abundant at Cream Gardens, with multiple species of colourful sea slugs inhabiting the soft coral colonies and kelp stipes. Demoiselles swim among the coral branches in large numbers, while blue maomao patrol the reef edge. The sheltered location in a bay on the island means that conditions are typically calm with mild currents, making this an ideal site for training dives, refresher dives, and photography sessions where stability and time are important. The shallow depth range of 3 to 18 metres allows extended bottom times for macro photography and careful observation of the intricate marine communities. Seahorses are occasionally spotted clinging to the kelp stipes, adding a rare and exciting encounter to the colourful garden setting. Cream Gardens represents the softer, more intimate side of Poor Knights diving, where the rewards come from close observation rather than big-animal encounters.

Dive Briefing

"The dive begins on the shallow reef slope at approximately 5 metres, where the first soft coral colonies appear in cream and orange colours. The density of soft corals increases as you follow the reef slope deeper, creating a continuous garden of colour that extends in all directions. Demoiselles swim among the coral branches in large schools, while the kelp forest adds vertical structure to the reef landscape. Continue along the slope to approximately 12 metres, where the soft coral coverage reaches its maximum density and the diversity of species is highest. Nudibranchs are abundant on the soft coral surfaces and kelp stipes, with multiple species of colourful sea slugs visible to attentive observers. The reef edge at 15 to 18 metres features larger gorgonian fans and black coral trees interspersed with the soft coral gardens. Blue maomao patrol this deeper boundary between the reef and the open water. The return follows a shallower route at 5 to 8 metres where the light penetration creates the most vibrant soft coral colours and the kelp forest canopy filters the sunlight into beautiful patterns. The safety stop is conducted on the shallow reef where the cream soft corals provide a stunning backdrop."
