Little Barrier Island, also known as Hauturu, is a predator-free wildlife sanctuary in the Hauraki Gulf that offers some of the most pristine and dramatic wall diving in the Auckland region. The island's steep volcanic coastline creates sheer underwater walls that drop from the surface to well beyond 30 metres, covered in dense soft coral gardens and gorgonian fans that thrive in the nutrient-rich currents flowing around the island. Massive schools of kingfish and pink maomao patrol the walls, while bronze whaler sharks make seasonal appearances during the summer months, adding big-animal excitement to the colourful reef diving. The island's status as a wildlife sanctuary extends below the water, where the marine ecosystem remains largely undisturbed by human activity. Manta rays are occasionally encountered during the warmest months, cruising the blue water beyond the reef edge in search of plankton. The walls are among the most colourful in the Hauraki Gulf, with orange and purple soft corals creating a living tapestry that contrasts with the deep blue water. The exposed offshore location ensures excellent water clarity and a sense of wilderness diving far from the urban influence of Auckland. Dive Briefing

"The dive begins on the exposed side of Little Barrier Island at approximately 5 metres, where the volcanic rock transitions immediately into a steep wall dropping into deep blue water. Descend along the wall face following the current, which typically flows along the island coastline. The wall is covered in dense soft corals and gorgonians from the first few metres. Schools of kingfish and pink maomao appear within minutes, growing larger with depth. At 15 to 20 metres, the soft coral coverage reaches maximum density and the fish aggregations are most impressive. Bronze whaler sharks may patrol the blue water beyond the reef edge during summer months. Continue along the wall to 25 to 30 metres where the largest kingfish and the most dramatic fish schools are found. The return follows the shallower reef crest at 8 to 12 metres where the light creates beautiful patterns on the wall face. The safety stop is conducted on the wall crest with schooling fish visible above."
