Site Overview

Matiu/Somes Island in Wellington Harbour offers unique macro diving with seahorses, pipefish, and extensive horse mussel beds in the sheltered waters surrounding this historic island. The island's status as a wildlife sanctuary extends to the surrounding marine environment, creating a protected area where small marine species thrive in the calm harbour waters. Seahorses are the highlight of the diving experience, regularly encountered clinging to the horse mussel shells and seagrass by patient observers who search systematically through the habitat. Pipefish swim among the mussel beds and seagrass, their elongated bodies camouflaged among the vegetation. The horse mussel beds are a distinctive feature of Matiu/Somes Island, creating an extensive reef-like structure on the harbour floor that supports diverse invertebrate communities and provides habitat for numerous small species. Moray eels occupy the spaces between the mussel shells, while snapper patrol above the beds in loose schools. The sheltered harbour location and shallow depth range make Matiu/Somes Island ideal for macro photography sessions where extended bottom times allow thorough searching for cryptic species.
