Site Overview

The Noises are a group of sheltered rocky reefs off Kawau Island in the inner Hauraki Gulf, offering calm conditions and excellent macro diving that make them one of the most popular training and photography sites in the Auckland region. The reefs are protected from ocean swells by the surrounding islands, creating a reliable dive environment that is accessible year-round in most weather conditions. Nudibranchs are exceptionally diverse at The Noises, with multiple species of colourful sea slugs inhabiting the rocky surfaces and kelp stipes in densities that delight macro photographers. The reef system consists of rocky outcrops separated by sandy channels and kelp forest patches, creating a varied underwater landscape at shallow depths. Blue maomao and demoiselles school above the reef, while moray eels and snapper occupy the crevices and deeper sections. Seahorses are occasionally encountered clinging to the kelp stipes by patient observers. The sheltered location and gentle topography make The Noises ideal for Open Water training dives, refresher dives, and skills practice. The proximity to Waiheke Island and Auckland means that The Noises are the most accessible boat dive in the Hauraki Gulf, with multiple operators running regular trips. The combination of reliable conditions, diverse macro life, and accessible depths makes The Noises an essential component of any Auckland diving itinerary.

Dive Briefing

"The dive begins on the rocky reef at approximately 5 metres, where the first nudibranchs and colourful sponge growth are visible on the rock surfaces. Follow the reef system along the rocky outcrops, exploring the crevices and overhangs that harbour moray eels and small reef fish. The nudibranch diversity is exceptional, with multiple species visible on systematic searches of the rock surfaces. Blue maomao and demoiselles school above the reef in the mid-water column. Continue along the reef to the deeper sections at 12 to 15 metres where the sponge gardens and soft coral growth are most developed. Snapper patrol the reef edge, while seahorses may be found on the kelp stipes by patient observers. The return follows the shallower reef at 5 to 8 metres where the light creates the best conditions for macro photography. The safety stop is conducted on the shallow reef near the boat anchor. The shallow sections near the boat anchor provide excellent opportunities for extended macro photography sessions with diverse nudibranch species on the rocky surfaces."
