Site Overview

Three Kings Arch is the crown jewel of New Zealand's most remote diving destination, located 55 kilometres northwest of Cape Reinga at the very tip of the North Island. This extraordinary dive site features massive granite walls that rise from deep oceanic depths, covered in an incredible profusion of soft corals, pink and black coral trees, and huge gorgonian fans that thrive in the nutrient-rich currents flowing between the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. The arch itself is a natural bridge formation that creates a dramatic swim-through experience surrounded by schools of kingfish numbering in the hundreds. Giant stingrays glide along the wall faces, and seasonal manta rays patrol the blue water beyond the reef edge. The isolation of the Three Kings Islands means that marine life here exists in a virtually pristine state, with fish populations that have never experienced spearfishing or significant human impact. Every dive at Three Kings Arch feels like an expedition into untouched wilderness, with the added thrill of knowing that fewer divers visit this site each year than summit Mount Everest. The combination of dramatic geology, abundant megafauna, and extreme isolation creates a diving experience that ranks among the finest in the southern hemisphere.

Dive Briefing

"The dive begins at the granite wall on the exposed ocean side of the main island group, where the anchor line or descent line takes you down to the reef edge at approximately 5 metres. From here, the wall drops away into deep blue water, and you follow the granite face in a clockwise direction around the arch formation. The wall is covered in dense soft corals, pink coral trees, and black coral fans from the first few metres of depth. Schools of kingfish and trevally patrol the current-swept sections, while giant stingrays cruise along the wall face at mid-depths. The arch swim-through at approximately 15 to 20 metres is the highlight of the dive, with light filtering through from the opposite side creating a spectacular silhouette effect. Beyond the arch, the outer wall attracts pelagic species including manta rays during the summer months. The current can be strong and unpredictable, so maintaining close contact with the wall and monitoring your air supply is essential. The return to the ascent point follows the shallower reef crest where pink maomao and demoiselles add colour to the granite landscape. Safety stops are conducted on the ascent line with the possibility of observing passing pelagic life in the blue water."
