    Site Overview

Anse La Verdure is Saint Lucia's art gallery under the sea - a sheltered marine-reserve reef off the Canaries strip that carries a new underwater sculpture park, a set of art installations deliberately placed on the seabed to double as artificial reef habitat and give the south coast one more reason for divers and snorkellers to visit. The premise is the attraction: instead of a natural wonder, you fin along a shallow sand-and-reef plain between sculptural forms colonising with early coral growth, already patrolled by the resident reef fish that make any structure their home - angelfish and butterflyfish working the ledges, parrotfish grinding along the flanks, sergeant majors holding in the shelter of the forms, and the morays, lobsters and crustaceans that move into any new reef with pleasing speed. Because the installations sit in 5 to 18 metres of clear, calm reserve water, the site is as easy as it is novel - a beginner, a refresher diver or a snorkeller can take in the whole exhibition without a demanding profile. It is young, so honest divers should expect an intriguing concept with promising early life rather than a fully developed coral cathedral. What Anse La Verdure really offers is a distinctive, feel-good dive that ties marine conservation, community art and reef restoration together in a single sheltered bay - and, on a good clear morning, a genuinely memorable one.

    Dive Briefing

“Enter from the mooring and sink onto the shallow reef, then take the sculpture site slowly, structure by structure, the way you would walk a gallery - hover at each installation, use your torch on the growing colonists and the fish sheltering in and around the forms, and let the concept land before moving on. Keep your fins up over the young growth and the sand plain; the reef is new and fragile and a kicked-up cloud ruins the shot and the surface for everyone behind you. The whole exhibition sits between 5 and 18 metres, so depth and gas are not constraints - enjoy long bottom time and slow photography. Watch for the resident morays, lobsters and the grazing fish already using the structures. Surface on your marker clear of the boat lane, and take a moment on the ride back to appreciate that you have just dived a reef being grown on purpose.”

    Safety & Hazards

    • Shallow, young artificial structures and their early coral growth - touch-none discipline matters more here than on a mature reef
    • The sand plains kick up visibility easily; keep your fins high and your trim flat
    • Recreational and snorkeller traffic at a novel, photogenic site near Canaries
    • Boat traffic above a shallow reserve reef; surface on a marker
    • The site's interest is the art, so divers can fixate on structures and drift over the shallower reef life around them
    Nearest Chamber
On-island recompression chamber in the north of the island near Castries (the country guide notes a modern chamber; confirm current operational status with your dive operator before relying on it); offshore referral chambers in Fort-de-France, Martinique and Bridgetown, Barbados

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Beginners, refreshers, snorkellers and anyone who wants something different from the wall-and-canyon routine are the perfect audience - the shallow, calm reserve profile asks almost nothing and the sculpture concept gives the dive a story beyond coral. It is a lovely family-friendly and photographer's site and a genuine curiosity for return visitors. Divers chasing mature reef or dramatic topography should temper expectations - this is a young artificial reef done with real ambition, and it will only get better with the decades.

    For Non-Divers

Anse La Verdure's shallow sculpture reef off Canaries is one of the rare dive sites a non-diving partner can genuinely share from the surface - the installations sit in water clear and shallow enough to snorkel, so a mask and fins get much of the art-and-fish show. The Canaries strip nearby has calm bathing beaches, and the drive south from Soufriere passes the botanical gardens, the mud baths and the great Piton viewpoints that fill a non-diver's day.
