Daini Koyomaru - Rodney Bay & Pigeon Island - Northern Coast, Saint Lucia
Site Overview
The Daini Koyomaru is the north coast's big one - a 75-metre Japanese dredger deliberately sunk in 1996 and now lying upside down on the seabed off Rodney Bay, her great steel keel arching over the sand like a cathedral roof and her hull furred with thirty years of coral, sponge and encrusting life. She is the deepest and most demanding of the island's two famous wrecks, and the contrast with the shallow, upright, novice-friendly Lesleen M is the whole point of a northern wreck day: where the Lesleen M welcomes everyone, the Koyomaru asks for an advanced card, a nitrox tank and the buoyancy discipline to swim a 33-metre hull without blowing your no-deco budget. The upside-down posture makes her uncanny and photogenic - you glide beneath the exposed keel, rise past the inverted superstructure and the old dredging gear now wearing gardens of soft coral, and peer into the black gaps where the holds have become permanent real estate for barracuda, morays, groupers and enormous shoals of snapper and yellowtail. Turtles cruise the sand skirt and a great barracuda or two stand permanent guard off the structure. The standard offering is a full exterior tour; the holds are open to look at but penetration is a separate technical discipline the operators keep firmly off the recreational menu. For advanced divers with the training, the Daini Koyomaru is one of the finest deep-wreck dives in the eastern Caribbean.
Dive Briefing
“Descend the shot line to the inverted hull around 18 to 24 metres, regroup at the keel, and begin a slow exterior circuit of the great upside-down structure, keeping the encrusted steel to one side and your computer firmly in view - this is a depth dive and the bottom is at 33 metres, so your no-deco limit is short and honest. Glide beneath the exposed keel and rise past the inverted superstructure and dredging gear, torch into the black hold-gaps for the barracuda, groupers and morays that live there, but do not enter them; penetration is off the recreational plan here. Watch your position against the shot line and the boat above, and start your ascent early enough for a long, relaxed safety stop. Surface on your marker clear of the mooring, and take the moment on the boat to register that you just swam one of the Caribbean's most striking deep wrecks.”

Safety & Hazards
- A deep wreck dive - the 33-metre bottom and the 30-plus hull circuit make decompression the ever-present risk without nitrox and planning
- The inverted structure offers entanglement hazards for penetrators; the exterior tour keeps clear of the overhead interior
- Sharp, unstable encrusted steel under the coral that a hand or fin finds on a wide hull
- Exposed northern position; surge and boat traffic build on windy days and complicate the shot-line descent and ascent
- Penetration of the holds is technical wreck diving, firmly outside the standard recreational offering here
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Advanced-certified, nitrox-running divers with excellent buoyancy and honest depth discipline - the Daini Koyomaru is the island's most demanding recreational dive and it is written for exactly that audience and no other. Wreck and deep enthusiasts and experienced underwater photographers will rate her the north's headline and plan whole trips around her inverted hull. Open Water and non-nitrox divers should not attempt the full circuit; they have the shallow, upright, beginner-friendly Lesleen M to satisfy their wreck appetite in comfortable water instead.
For Non-Divers
The Daini Koyomaru lies off the busy northern coast within easy reach of Rodney Bay's marina front - a non-diving partner can spend the day on the waterfront promenade, kayaking the landlocked bay, shopping the duty-free mile or visiting the Pigeon Island National Landmark on the causeway while you make the deep wreck circuit. The north puts the island's best land infrastructure right at the wreck's doorstep.
