    Site Overview

Le Sport is the island's seahorse address - a coral reef system draped in soft coral and towering gorgonian sea fans off the northern coast, and the single most reliable place in Saint Lucia to find the tiny, curled-tailed fish that underwater photographers travel the world to photograph. Guides work the gardens here slowly and by torch, reading the sea fans and sponge stands the way a birdwatcher reads a hedgerow, and the patient diver who hovers and trusts the guide is rewarded with lined seahorses clinging to the swaying fans and, on a good day, the almost impossibly small dwarf seahorse hitched to a soft-coral polyp where no unaided eye would ever have found it. But the site's charm runs well beyond its famous residents: the whole shallow reef between 5 and 18 metres is a soft-coral garden in gentle current, waving with sea fans and sponge, humming with angelfish, butterflyfish and parrotfish, and hiding morays, crabs, shrimps and every manner of cryptic small life in its branches. Because the water is sheltered, warm and current-light, Le Sport is as comfortable for a newer diver as it is compelling for a macro obsessive - a slow, shallow, hands-off naturalist dive where the payoff is measured in centimetres and in the quiet thrill of a guide's torch beam settling, at last, on a seahorse.

    Dive Briefing

“Enter and stay shallow and slow - this is a hover-and-hunt dive, not a cruise, so find a sea-fan garden at 10 to 15 metres, get horizontal, and let the guide work the corals with a torch while you watch the beam rather than the clock. Buoyancy is everything: you will be hovering close to fragile soft coral, so keep your fins up, your knees bent and your hands firmly where they belong. When the guide signals a seahorse, approach gently, take your time, and never steady a shot on the fans themselves. Air burns slowly when you hover, so enjoy the long, still bottom time. Surface on your marker clear of the moorings, and accept that the best photographs at Le Sport are the ones you almost miss while you are too busy looking. Between gardens, drift the short distance to the next stand of fans and repeat - a good guide will pace the dive around two or three productive patches so the whole hour is spent hunting, not transit.”

    Safety & Hazards

    • Fragile soft-coral and gorgonian gardens close to the surface - the seahorse hunt tempts divers to crowd, touch and break the very fans the animals cling to
    • Very slow, stationary diving in a small area; watch your air and your buddy, who may be ten metres away and motionless
    • Buoyancy discipline in the shallows, where hovering over coral risks a stand or a fin-knock
    • Boat traffic above the moorings; surface on a marker
    • Camouflaged stingers and urchins among the coral that a searching hand finds
    Nearest Chamber
On-island recompression chamber in the north of the island near Castries (the country guide notes a modern chamber; confirm current operational status with your dive operator before relying on it); offshore referral chambers in Fort-de-France, Martinique and Bridgetown, Barbados

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Macro and underwater photographers are Le Sport's devoted constituency, and the site is one of the finest small-life dives in the eastern Caribbean for anyone who loves a torch-and-close-focus hunt. Confident beginners and casual reef divers enjoy the beautiful soft-coral gardens and the seahorses too, on the guides' terms. Divers wanting walls, wrecks or big pelagic action should look elsewhere; Le Sport is a slow, shallow, hover-and-look dive, and it asks for patience above all else. Non-divers and snorkellers, meanwhile, can appreciate just how pretty the outer gardens are from the surface on a calm day, which makes it a rare site the whole group can share.

    For Non-Divers

Le Sport's shallow, calm soft-coral gardens sit off the busy northern resort coast, minutes from Rodney Bay's waterfront, the Pigeon Island causeway and the duty-free mile - a non-diving partner can fill the day on land while you go seahorse-hunting, or share the very shallow reef from the surface with a mask, where the outer gardens are visible from above.
