Saline Point - Rodney Bay & Pigeon Island - Northern Coast, Saint Lucia
Site Overview
Saline Point is the northern coast's gentle classroom - the island's most northerly dive site, a shallow, sheltered reef off the big northwest resorts that runs from almost-snorkelling depth down to about 18 metres and stays calm, warm and current-light on days when every more exposed site has given up. It is, in other words, close to an ideal beginner and training ground: an easy sand-and-coral landscape of low ledges and scattered bommies, thick with the accessible small life that keeps a nervous new diver delighted - scorpionfish draped and impossible-to-spot on the rock, morays poked from every hole, clouds of juvenile fish and queens over the coral, southern stingrays flattened on the open sand, and the occasional grazing turtle drifting past. Because the reef is so shallow and so protected, the light reaches all of it, which makes it a fine first-ever boat dive, a confidence-building refresher, and a superb macro-and-critter playground for anyone content to hover at five metres and look closely rather than descend a wall. Saline Point will never top a highlight reel; it does something arguably more valuable, turning more nervous first-time divers into happy certified ones than almost any other ground on the island.
Dive Briefing
“Enter and stay shallow by default - this is a reef that lives in the top ten metres, so spend the whole dive pottering over the coral patches and sand ledges with your torch, hunting the scorpionfish, eels and juvenile fish that crowd the easy ground. Only drift out to the 18-metre edge if you want variety; the payoff here is accessible, cooperative small life at head-height. Keep your fins high over the sand to avoid kicking up silt, and mind your buoyancy so you neither stand on the low coral nor pop into the surface. The water is warm, clear and shallow, so enjoy long, relaxed bottom time. Surface on your marker clear of the moorings, and enjoy being the most northerly diver on the island. It is the site to send a nervous friend to, and the site they thank you for afterward - a warm, forgiving reef bowl where the only deadline is the boat's patience.”

Safety & Hazards
- Very shallow, sandy reef - divers can inadvertently stand on coral or kick up silt that ruins visibility behind them
- Camouflaged scorpionfish and urchins resting on the sand and ledges that a careless hand finds
- Training and beginner traffic concentrated on a small, easy ground
- Boat traffic above the moorings; surface on a marker
- Sun and heat on a very shallow, clear reef over a long safety stop
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
New Open Water divers, students, refreshers and anyone who wants a genuinely easy, calm first or second dive are made for Saline Point - shallow, sheltered, current-free and full of cooperative small life that rewards hovering and looking closely. It is a superb macro-and-critter site and a great mixed-group, snorkelling-adjacent stop for a whole family or party. Experienced divers chasing walls, wrecks and big blue will find it modest; this is the north coast's training ground and social reef, and it wears that role well.
For Non-Divers
Saline Point is the island's most northerly site and sits off the big northwest resorts, whose beach fronts, spas and restaurants fill a non-diving partner's day while you take an easy training dive. The shallow, calm reef is also excellent snorkelling, so a mask-and-fins partner can see much of the same small life from the surface a few metres above you.
