Site Overview

Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary is a remote coral reef paradise located over one hundred miles off the Texas coast featuring spectacular coral formations, whale shark aggregations, and extraordinary biodiversity protected within a federal marine sanctuary. The three bank systems rise from the Gulf of Mexico floor creating underwater oases where hard and soft corals thrive on the dome-shaped reef structure supporting over three hundred species of tropical fish and invertebrates. Seasonal whale sharks and manta rays visit during summer months feeding on plankton concentrations around the bank edges creating some of the most spectacular megafauna encounters available in United States waters. The sanctuary protection since nineteen ninety two has preserved exceptional coral health and fish density making the banks a living laboratory for marine research and a pilgrimage destination for serious divers willing to make the long boat journey from the Texas coast. The three distinct bank formations each offer unique diving experiences with the East Bank featuring the shallowest coral gardens and the West Bank supporting the most extensive hard coral formations. The deepwater habitats surrounding the banks support commercially important species including snapper and grouper populations that provide important ecological connections between the shallow reef and open ocean environments.
