Shark's Cove at Pupukea on Oahu's legendary North Shore is one of Hawaii's premier shore dives featuring dramatic lava tube caverns, abundant marine life, and seasonal whitetip reef sharks resting in shallow caves. Despite its name, the cove is named for the reef's shark-tooth shape rather than dangerous sharks. The volcanic geology creates underwater arches, tunnels, and swim-throughs that harbor green sea turtles, octopus, and diverse tropical fish. Summer conditions provide calm seas and excellent visibility while winter brings dangerous surf making the site accessible primarily from May through October. The lava rock bottom supports rich invertebrate communities including nudibranchs and sponges creating excellent macro photography opportunities. The North Shore location means the site benefits from the nutrient-rich waters brought by seasonal north swells supporting exceptional marine biodiversity. The volcanic lava tubes were formed during ancient eruptions and now serve as critical habitat for whitetip reef sharks that use the shallow caverns as daytime resting areas. The site has been featured in numerous nature documentaries highlighting the dramatic underwater topography and abundant marine life. Summer conditions transform the cove into a calm underwater paradise with visibility exceeding twenty meters revealing the full extent of the lava tube network and coral gardens.

Dive Briefing

"Enter the water at the designated rocky entry point wearing water shoes for protection against sharp lava rock. Swim out to the reef edge where the lava tubes begin at approximately 5 meters depth. Explore the caverns and swim-throughs where whitetip reef sharks rest during the day and green sea turtles frequent the cleaning stations. The outer reef drops to 18 meters with schooling jacks and diverse coral communities. Return along the shallower reef exploring the macro life including nudibranchs and octopus hiding among the lava formations. Exit carefully through the same entry point watching for surge conditions. The lava tube entrances are clearly visible from the surface allowing you to plan your exploration route before descending. Each tube system offers different characteristics from wide-open chambers to narrow swim-throughs requiring single-file navigation. The outer reef beyond the tubes features healthy coral heads and schooling fish that add variety to the dive profile."
