Sitka Kelp Forests – Alaska

Site Overview

Sitka's Channel Islands kelp forests represent one of Alaska's premier cold-water diving experiences featuring towering bull kelp canopies, giant Pacific octopus, playful sea lions, and extraordinary invertebrate landscapes in pristine North Pacific waters. The kelp forests create underwater cathedrals with sunlight filtering through the golden canopy supporting diverse communities of rockfish, wolf eels, and colorful anemones. Giant Pacific octopus with arm spans exceeding five meters inhabit the rocky crevices while sunflower sea stars with up to twenty-four arms patrol the reef surfaces. The nutrient-rich waters support an abundance of life including harbor seals, sea lions, and seasonal humpback whales visible from the dive boat making every surface interval an additional wildlife experience. The underwater topography features dramatic walls and pinnacles rising from deep water creating upwelling currents that concentrate nutrients and attract large pelagic species including salmon and halibut. Divers frequently encounter sand tiger sharks patrolling the reef edges while colorful anemones and sponges carpet every available surface. The kelp forest ecosystem supports over one hundred species of fish and invertebrates making each dive a unique exploration of one of the most productive marine environments on the planet. Seasonal variations bring different species with summer offering the warmest water and longest days for multiple dive opportunities.
