    Site Overview

Tunnels Beach at Makua on Kauai's north shore is one of Hawaii's most spectacular shore dives featuring extensive coral gardens, lava tube swim-throughs, and seasonal humpback whale encounters during winter months. The reef system extends from shallow coral gardens near shore to deeper lava formations at 18 meters supporting extraordinary fish density and diversity. Green sea turtles are abundant while reef sharks patrol the deeper reef edge. The lava tubes create underwater tunnels and caverns that give the site its name and provide habitat for moray eels and lobsters. During humpback season from December through April, whale songs can be heard underwater and surface sightings are common from the dive site. The north shore location provides access to some of Kauai's most extensive coral reef systems with healthy cauliflower coral and plate coral formations extending across hundreds of meters of reef. The lava tubes that give the site its name were formed during ancient volcanic eruptions creating underwater tunnels large enough for divers to swim through comfortably. During humpback season the underwater whale songs create an unforgettable acoustic experience as the low-frequency sounds resonate through the water column. The site supports one of Kauai's highest densities of green sea turtles with multiple individuals observed on virtually every dive.

    Dive Briefing

"Enter the water at the designated shore entry point during calm summer conditions and swim toward the reef system approximately 50 meters offshore. Explore the coral gardens at 5 to 12 meters with dense tropical fish populations and green sea turtles. Continue to the deeper lava tubes and swim-throughs at 12 to 18 meters where reef sharks patrol and moray eels hide in crevices. During winter months, humpback whale songs fill the water and surface sightings are possible during safety stops. Return along the shallower reef exploring the macro life before exiting carefully through the shore entry. The coral gardens near shore feature extensive plate coral formations that create sheltered areas for diverse tropical fish communities. The lava tubes at depth connect through swim-throughs that reveal new underwater landscapes with each passage. During whale season the underwater acoustic environment adds a magical dimension to the diving experience as songs resonate through the water."
