    Site Overview

Hon Roi is a dramatic wall dive site in the An Thoi archipelago, featuring a vertical rock face draped in large sea fans and soft corals that thrive in the moderate current flowing around the island. The wall descends from 8 to 22 metres, its entire surface covered in gorgonian fans, sponges, and colourful soft corals that create a spectacular living tapestry. Dense schools of fusiliers stream above the wall in the current, creating the fish-filled water column scenes that make Hon Roi one of Phu Quoc's most photogenic sites. Large groupers patrol the wall ledges, and moray eels occupy the numerous crevices in the rock formation. Barracuda occasionally patrol the open water above the wall, attracted by the concentration of prey species around the reef structure. The current exposure that supports the rich filter-feeding communities also adds excitement to the dive profile, with drift diving techniques allowing comfortable exploration of the entire wall face. The shallower sections at 8 to 12 metres feature bright hard corals and schooling fish that provide an excellent safety stop environment. Hon Roi represents the best wall diving available from Phu Quoc and demonstrates the productive marine ecosystems supported by current-exposed reef formations in the Gulf of Thailand.

    Dive Briefing

"Descend to the top of the wall at approximately 10 metres and orient to the current direction flowing along the rock face. Allow the current to carry you in a comfortable drift along the wall, exploring the sea fan gardens and soft coral communities concentrated between 12 and 20 metres where nutrient delivery is highest. Scan the blue water above the wall for barracuda and trevally patrolling the current lines. Large groupers shelter on the wall ledges, while moray eels occupy crevices throughout the formation. The fusilier schools concentrate on the upcurrent side of the wall, creating dense aggregations ideal for wide-angle photography. Navigate along the wall face maintaining good buoyancy to avoid contact with the delicate gorgonian fans. As you ascend, the wall transitions from soft coral dominated to hard coral dominated communities with increasing fish density. Complete your safety stop at 5 metres along the shallow reef top with your DSMB deployed before surfacing near the dive boat."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Hon Roi is suited for Advanced Open Water certified divers comfortable with wall diving and moderate current exposure. The site rewards experienced divers seeking dramatic underwater topography and schooling fish encounters. Wide-angle photographers will capture stunning images of the sea fan covered wall with fusilier schools and blue water backgrounds. The site is less suitable for beginners due to the depth, current, and wall environment. Experienced divers who enjoy dynamic dive profiles will find Hon Roi among Phu Quoc's most rewarding sites.
