On an expedition you are largely self-catering aboard your vessel, provisioning in Noumea or Nadi before arrival and topping up with limited fresh produce in Mata-Utu. Ashore, expect simple Polynesian-French fare: root crops, fresh fish, coconut and French bread in the few shops. Plan all drinking water and speciality supplies independently, as the territory imports almost everything.

The entire Wallis and Futuna territory is effectively a blank canvas for scuba diving, visited almost exclusively by private yachts, exploratory liveaboards and the occasional scientific expedition. There are no permanent dive centres anywhere in the collectivity, so all diving is self-supported: you bring your own cylinders, compressor, gas and emergency planning, and you dive where weather and currents allow. The rewards are extraordinary. Visibility commonly exceeds 40 m and water temperatures hold a warm 26 to 30 C year-round, while the reefs and walls show almost no human impact. Potential highlights across the territory include rare whale shark encounters (most plausible from November to March), humpback whale migrations from July to October, and large pelagic aggregations around the seamounts and passes between Futuna and the Lau Group to the west. For the truly intrepid, this is a chance to log dives at sites that may never have seen another diver, from the lagoon passes of Wallis to the black-coral walls of Alofi. It is demanding, remote and logistically complex, but few places on Earth still offer this degree of underwater wilderness.

Expedition & Liveaboard Territory

Reaching the territory for an expedition means flying Aircalin to Wallis (WLS) or Futuna (FUT) from Noumea or Nadi, then joining a private vessel or a specialised Pacific liveaboard that includes the collectivity on a larger Polynesian route. There are no locally based liveaboards, so the boat must be chartered elsewhere and provisioned fully, including a compressor and redundant safety gear.
