Site Overview

Fakaua Reef lies off the small motu of Ilot Fakaua on the eastern side of the Wallis lagoon, a shallow fringing reef that is perfect for a relaxed dive paired with snorkelling. Depths are gentle, reaching only about 18 m with an average near 10 m, and the reef slope is alive with turtles, moray eels, spotted stingrays and schools of parrotfish grazing the coral. Butterflyfish and anemonefish flit through the hard corals, while the sandy patches between bommies hold the occasional garden eel and flattened ray. Visibility typically ranges from 20 to 40 m, and water temperatures hold a warm 26 to 30 C year-round, comfortable in a light wetsuit. The site is sheltered and suitable for beginners, and because it works equally well as a snorkel site it is a favourite for mixed groups of divers and non-divers. Local access is by private boat from Mata-Utu, and with no commercial pressure the reef is healthy and colourful. Fakaua Reef captures the easy, untouched charm of the Wallis lagoon and is an ideal counterpart to the high-adrenaline passes elsewhere in the Wallis (Uvea) - Lagoon & Outer Reef region. With the motu overhead and the open lagoon behind, the reef is a relaxed, family-friendly counterpoint to the high-adrenaline passes elsewhere in Wallis, and a fine place to slow down and simply watch the reef breathe.

Dive Briefing

"The dive at Fakaua Reef begins with a short private-boat transfer from Mata-Utu to the motu, where the skipper picks a calm section of fringing reef away from any boat traffic. Descending to the sandy substrate at around 10 m, divers follow the reef slope as it rises toward the shallows, surrounded by green turtles, spotted stingrays and parrotfish grazing the hard corals. The maximum depth reaches only about 18 m while the average sits near 10 m, so this is an easy, long bottom-time profile ideal for new divers and for combining with snorkellers on the surface. Current is mild, and the guide keeps the group close to protect the fragile coral and to avoid silting the loose sand. A torch reveals moray eels and small crabs in the crevices, and a slow safety stop is completed on the surface marker near the boat. Because there is no dive centre, all gas and emergency planning are self-provided; the site is best dived from May to October when the lagoon is clearest, and a relaxed, well-buoyed dive rewards the patient eye with abundant, approachable reef life."
