Diving & Travel Guide to the Great Barrier Reef – Whitsunday Islands
About Great Barrier Reef – Whitsunday Islands
The Whitsunday Islands section of the Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's most iconic and accessible tropical destinations, combining world-class outer reef diving with stunning island scenery in the heart of the GBR World Heritage Area. The 74 Whitsunday Islands, formed from ancient volcanic peaks now submerged as the sea level rose, create a breathtaking landscape of turquoise channels, sheltered bays, and pristine white sand beaches including the famous Whitehaven Beach, consistently rated as Australia's most beautiful beach. The diving spans two distinct environments: the outer reef systems including Bait Reef, Hardy Reef, and Hook Island sites offer spectacular bommie diving, coral walls, and drift dives in the open Coral Sea, while the inner island fringing reefs provide sheltered diving with healthy coral gardens and abundant marine life in calmer conditions. Bait Reef's famous Stepping Stones, a series of flat-topped coral pinnacles rising from 15 meters, is one of Australia's most photographed dive sites, while the Manta Ray Drop-off on Bait Reef provides reliable encounters with reef manta rays during the winter months. The outer reef sites of Hardy Reef and Hook Island offer wall diving, pinnacles, and bommies with excellent visibility and regular encounters with reef sharks, turtles, and schooling pelagics. The Whitsunday Islands are accessed from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, both offering extensive accommodation, dining, and activity options. The combination of stunning island scenery, accessible reef diving, and the famous Whitehaven Beach experience makes the Whitsundays one of Australia's most compelling tropical destinations for divers and non-diving companions alike.

Getting There
The Whitsunday Islands are accessed via two gateways: Proserpine Airport (PPP) serving Airlie Beach, and Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) on Hamilton Island itself. Both airports receive direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. Airlie Beach, the mainland gateway, is approximately 30 minutes from Proserpine airport and serves as the main departure point for dive boats heading to the outer reefs. Hamilton Island offers a resort-island experience with dive operators running daily trips to the outer reef and inner island sites. The outer reef sites are approximately 1.5-2 hours by boat from either departure point. Daily flights, ferries, and shuttle services connect the islands with the mainland, making multi-island itineraries easy to arrange.
