About Western Australia – South Coast

Western Australia's South Coast, stretching from Bremer Bay to the South Australian border via Esperance and the Recherche Archipelago, is one of Australia's most remote and spectacular coastal diving destinations, offering pristine marine environments in the cold, clear waters of the Great Australian Bight and Southern Ocean. The region's diving is characterized by dramatic granite headlands, offshore island systems, and extraordinary marine biodiversity including the famous orca (killer whale) aggregation at Bremer Bay, one of the world's most reliable locations for orca encounters. The Recherche Archipelago, a chain of 105 islands and 1,500 islets stretching along the Esperance coastline, protects outstanding marine environments with pristine coral reefs, kelp forests, and diverse marine life including Australian sea lions, schooling fish, and reef sharks. Esperance, the region's main town, provides access to the archipelago and the nearby Lucky Bay and Twilight Bay, where the famous swimming kangaroos provide one of Australia's most iconic wildlife photography opportunities. The South Coast's cold, nutrient-rich waters support an extraordinary diversity of marine life including southern right whales (June-October), humpback whales during migration, dolphins, and diverse invertebrate communities. The region's isolation and pristine coastline ensure minimal visitor impact, with diving experiences characterized by empty reefs, abundant marine life, and the raw beauty of the Southern Ocean coastline. Albany, the region's historic port city, offers whale watching at the historic whaling station and access to the dramatic Torndirrup National Park coastline. This region is also a key part of the Great Southern Reef, where the cold, nutrient-dense upwellings from the deep Antarctic waters provide the lifeblood for massive kelp forests that can grow up to 30 meters tall. These underwater forests create a complex, three-dimensional habitat that supports thousands of species, many of which are endemic to this specific stretch of coastline. For the few divers who explore these waters, the sense of scale and the feeling of being in a truly wild, high-energy environment is unmatched anywhere else in Australia.

The South Coast is accessed via Esperance Airport (EPR) receiving regional flights from Perth. Esperance is approximately 720 kilometers southeast of Perth via the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway (approximately 8 hours drive). Albany, approximately 400 kilometers southeast of Perth, is accessed via Albany Airport (ALH) with regional flights from Perth or a 4.5-hour drive. Bremer Bay is approximately 5 hours from Perth. The South Coast is best explored by car, with the drive from Perth through the wheatbelt and goldfields being one of Western Australia's most scenic road trips. Dive operators are based in Esperance, Albany, and Bremer Bay, running boat trips to the Recherche Archipelago, the orca aggregation, and the offshore reef systems.
