Burgenland is Austria’s easternmost and sunniest state, and it hides one of the country’s best-loved inland dive sites in the Neufelder See. This flooded former lignite mine is exceptionally clear, sheltered and warm for an Austrian lake, making it a year-round favourite for training, photography and relaxed fun dives. Depths exceed 40 m and the submerged landscape is rich with sunken trees, training platforms and a handful of small wrecks that give new divers a taste of wreck diving in safe conditions. The surrounding steppe and shallow lakes of the Seewinkel, part of the Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park, round out a region that pairs diving with birdwatching and wine. Burgenland proves that you do not need towering Alps for rewarding freshwater diving: a warm, clear former mining lake with easy logistics is often exactly what divers want.

Getting There

Fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE) and drive east about an hour to Neufelder See near Wiener Neustadt. The lake is also reachable by regional train to Wiener Neustadt plus a short taxi or bike ride. A rental car is the most flexible way to combine the dive lake with the region’s wine villages.
