Salzburg state wraps the northern shore of the Salzkammergut and adds its own roster of sparkling lakes, high-altitude reservoirs and training quarries. The Salzburg shore of Wolfgangsee and the intimate Fuschlsee give easy access to the same clear water beloved across the border, while Wallersee and the warm Zeller See offer relaxed, photogenic dives with mountain panoramas and, at Zell am See, a famous winter ice-diving festival. The Kaprun high-mountain reservoirs of Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden sit above 2,000 m with submerged intake towers and dam walls in crystal water that demands altitude certification and a drysuit, and the little Torrener Seen of the Bluntautal serve mountain-rescue training. Salzachsee at Liefering is a handy quarry-lake training ground. Together these sites make Salzburg a complete freshwater diving destination within easy reach of the eponymous festival city.

Getting There

Fly into Salzburg Airport (SZG), a short drive from most of the region’s lakes, or into Munich (MUC) and approach from the north. A rental car is the easiest way to reach the high reservoirs at Kaprun and the smaller lakes; the city and Wolfgangsee are also on the rail network.
