Laje de Santos is São Paulo state's most iconic dive site and arguably the best diving in southeastern Brazil, a dramatic granite seamount rising from 30 metres depth to just below the surface approximately 40 kilometres offshore from Santos. This underwater mountain attracts massive schools of mackerel, barracuda, and giant trevally with seasonal eagle rays and manta rays from June to November, and occasional hammerhead and whale shark encounters. The Parque Estadual Marinho da Laje de Santos protects the walls covered in gorgonians and large groupers with excellent night diving featuring squid and baitball action. The nearby Ilha da Queimada Grande (Snake Island) adds spectacular wall diving with pelagics and dolphins, though access is restricted. Despite São Paulo's reputation as an urban mega-city, Laje de Santos demonstrates that world-class pelagic diving exists within reach of Brazil's largest metropolitan area.

Getting There

Fly to São Paulo (GRU/CGH) and drive 1.5 hours to Santos or the Guarujá coast. Dive boats depart from Santos or Guarujá marinas for the 2-3 hour crossing to Laje de Santos. The offshore location requires calm seas for safe access.
