Maragogi and Maceió in Alagoas state form part of Brazil's Costa dos Corais (Coral Coast), home to the largest continuous coral reef system in the South Atlantic within the APA Costa dos Corais marine protected area. The famous Gales de Maragogi natural pools appear at low tide revealing crystal-clear shallow waters teeming with tropical fish, while the outer reef systems offer rewarding scuba diving with table acroporas, butterflyfish, and angelfish at depths of 5 to 15 metres. Maceió adds additional reef systems at Parrachos de Roteiro and the unique Naufrágio do Cabeço artificial reef. Water temperatures remain a comfortable 26-28 degrees Celsius throughout the year with generally calm conditions making this an ideal region for beginner divers and families. The protected status of the marine area ensures healthy coral communities that have become a model for sustainable reef tourism in Brazil, balancing conservation with accessible diving experiences.

Getting There

Fly to Maceió/Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport (MCZ) with connections from São Paulo and Recife. Maragogi is 125 kilometres north via the scenic AL-101 coastal highway, taking approximately two hours by car.
