Paraná's Ilha do Mel and Caiobá offer unique diving experiences in the transitional waters between Brazil's tropical south and subtropical coast. Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) is a car-free island nature reserve featuring the remarkable Gruta das Encantadas sea cave with stalactites, an air pocket, overhead bats, and dramatic light effects creating a truly unique dive environment. The Farol das Conchas rocky reef offers stingrays, morays, and occasional dolphin encounters in the nutrient-rich southern waters. Caiobá on the mainland provides artificial reef diving with concrete structures and boats colonised by seahorses and frogfish, popular for training and night dives. The cooler subtropical waters of 18-24 degrees Celsius support a different species mix than the tropical north with kelp-like Sargassum forests adding underwater scenery variety. While less developed for diving than northern Brazil, Paraná rewards adventurous divers with distinctive underwater landscapes and fewer crowds.

Getting There

Fly to Curitiba (CWB) and drive 2 hours east to the coast. Ilha do Mel is accessed by boat from Pontal do Sul or Encantadas. Caiobá is directly accessible by car from Curitiba via the BR-277 highway.
