    About Fogo

Fogo is Cape Verde's most geologically dramatic island, dominated by the active Pico do Fogo volcano rising nearly three thousand meters above the Atlantic, creating an underwater landscape of extraordinary volcanic formations including recent lava flows, black sand slopes, and geological features shaped by ongoing volcanic activity. While diving infrastructure remains extremely limited with no established dive centers on the island, the underwater environment offers unique opportunities for adventurous divers to explore volcanic geology found nowhere else in the archipelago. The waters around Sao Filipe feature black sand slopes where volcanic sediment creates stark underwater landscapes, while the coastal areas near Mosteiros showcase dramatic lava formations from historical eruptions that have created intricate underwater cave systems and pinnacles. The volcanic activity has heated certain underwater areas, creating thermal vents that attract unique communities of thermophilic marine organisms. The island's dramatic coastline, with cliffs rising hundreds of meters from the ocean, continues underwater with equally impressive vertical relief. For the few divers who reach Fogo, the experience combines genuine exploration diving with the opportunity to witness the raw geological forces that created the entire Cape Verde archipelago. The island's remoteness and limited infrastructure make it suitable only for self-sufficient divers or those joining organized expedition trips.
