Diving & Travel Guide to São Vicente, Cape Verde
About São Vicente
Sao Vicente, home to Cape Verde's cultural capital of Mindelo, offers a compelling combination of harbor wreck diving, volcanic wall systems, and access to some of the archipelago's most dramatic offshore diving including the deep channels between Sao Vicente and Santo Antao. Mindelo's historic harbor contains several storm-sunk vessels and the remains of centuries of maritime traffic, creating fascinating wreck diving opportunities in sheltered waters. The Areia Branca sand dredger wreck and the MS Brasil cargo wreck provide accessible artificial reef diving colonized by diverse marine communities. Beyond the harbor, the island's exposed western coastline features dramatic volcanic walls, pinnacles, and deep channels where Atlantic currents concentrate pelagic life including tuna, wahoo, and various shark species. The Canal de Sao Vicente between Sao Vicente and neighboring Santo Antao offers some of the deepest and most thrilling diving in Cape Verde, with walls descending beyond recreational limits and strong currents attracting large oceanic predators. Fish Valley and Turtle Bay provide more relaxed diving with abundant reef fish and regular turtle encounters. The island's rich cultural scene, including live music venues, art galleries, and the annual Carnival celebration, makes it an outstanding destination for divers seeking both underwater adventure and authentic Cape Verdean cultural immersion.
