Pingtan Island is Fujian’s largest island and one of China’s most dramatic diving destinations, where powerful ocean currents sculpt extraordinary underwater granite formations along an exposed island coastline. Located at the narrowest point of the Taiwan Strait, Pingtan experiences strong tidal currents that bring nutrient-rich water to the island’s reefs, supporting dense marine ecosystems with excellent biodiversity. The underwater landscape is dominated by massive granite boulders that have been smoothed by millennia of current action, creating surreal rounded formations, arches, and channels that provide habitat for colorful soft corals, gorgonian sea fans, and diverse reef fish. The famous Blue Tears bioluminescent phenomenon, caused by dinoflagellate blooms, creates spectacular nighttime displays on Pingtan’s beaches and occasionally underwater during spring and summer. Diving conditions can be challenging due to the strong currents that give the area its reputation, but the rewards include encounters with schooling pelagic fish, reef sharks, eagle rays, and large grouper that are attracted to the nutrient-rich waters. Getting There

Fly into Fuzhou Changle International Airport (FOC) then transfer by car approximately 2 hours to Pingtan Island via the Pingtan Strait Bridge. High-speed rail to Fuzhou from major Chinese cities is also available.
