About Aitutaki

Aitutaki is home to one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, and its diving matches the famous postcard views. Inside the lagoon, The Pinnacles rise as dramatic coral columns covered in soft corals, surrounded by giant clams and schooling fusiliers, while Honeymoon Island and The Aquarium offer shallow, calm dives perfect for beginners and snorkellers. The outer reef is where the real adventure begins: the Aitutaki Drop-Off and Moturakau Wall are steep walls draped in soft corals with grey reef sharks, dogtooth tuna and mantas, and Papua Passage is a thrilling current-swept drift with eagle rays and barracuda. The Matai Wreck adds an accessible artificial reef, and The Caves offer caverns full of flashlight fish and resting nurse sharks. Reached by a short flight from Rarotonga, Aitutaki combines world-class lagoon diving with true outer-reef excitement.

Getting There

Aitutaki is reached by a 50-minute flight from Rarotonga with Air Rarotonga. The main dive bases are around Arutanga and the Ootu Peninsula on the eastern side of the lagoon. Boat trips to the lagoon pinnacles take 15 to 25 minutes, while outer-reef sites such as the Drop-Off and Papua Passage take 25 to 30 minutes. Two local dive operators run scheduled trips, and the sheltered lagoon makes many sites diveable year-round in good weather.
