Manihiki and Rakahanga are two remote northern atolls famous as the black pearl capital of the Cook Islands. Manihiki’s lagoon is lined with pearl farms, and diving among the pearl lines and oyster beds is a rare experience found almost nowhere else, with coral reefs, large schools of trevally and barracuda, sharks and spectacular coral formations. Neighbouring Rakahanga is even more remote, with a clear, pristine lagoon and fringing reefs teeming with fish and completely unspoilt, though it has no formal dive operators. Reached by a long flight from Rarotonga, these atolls combine culture and diving for travellers who want to see both the famous pearls and near-pristine reefs. Infrastructure is limited, so dives are arranged locally, often alongside a pearl farm visit.

Getting There

Manihiki is reached by a long flight from Rarotonga with Air Rarotonga (often via Papeete or with a chartered service), and Rakahanga is visited from Manihiki by boat. Dive infrastructure is limited, so dives are arranged locally, frequently in combination with a pearl farm tour. The lagoon sites are a short boat ride from the main village of Tukao. Plan ahead and travel in the dry season for the calmest, clearest conditions.
