About Inland Freshwater Sites

Although Croatia is best known for its Adriatic coast, its interior holds a handful of freshwater dive sites that are useful for training, confined-water practice and unusual scenic diving. The star is the Mrežnica River near Karlovac, a crystal-clear karst river of cascading travertine barriers and submerged greenery that is perfect for shallow, photographic dives close to Zagreb. Jarun Lake on the edge of Zagreb is an urban training and night-dive spot with sunken platforms and easy access, while the Drava River around Osijek offers limited, low-visibility wreck and training exploration. Oko Lake near Biograd is a tiny confined-water venue, and the Plitvice Lakes - Croatia’s most famous national park - are strictly protected with no diving permitted, documented here as a conservation case study. These inland sites will never rival the sea, but they are practical, convenient and a good way to keep skills current between coastal trips or to introduce new divers in a controlled environment.

Getting There

The inland sites are reached by road from Zagreb (ZAG) and the main highway network. The Mrežnica is near Karlovac (about an hour from Zagreb), Jarun is within Zagreb itself, the Drava is at Osijek in the east, and Oko Lake is near Biograd on the coast road. A rental car is the simplest way to reach them.
