About Kvarner Gulf

The Kvarner Gulf is the broad, island-studded bay east of Istria, sheltered by the Cres, Krk, Rab and Lošinj islands and watched over by the port city of Rijeka. It is a quieter, less commercial diving region than the Dalmatian coast, prized for its clear water, dramatic walls and a strong population of large fish. The outer islands drop into deep blue with vertical reefs dressed in red and yellow gorgonians, while the sheltered inner channels hold macro-rich reefs, seahorses and nudibranchs. Highlights include the Lina cargo wreck off Cres, the gentle Tihany steamer near Krk, the vertical Plavnik and Kampor walls, and the summer appearance of blue sharks off Plavnik. The gulf also shelters Griffon vultures on Cres and is a recognised dolphin area, so topside wildlife rivals the diving. With easy access from Rijeka and good ferry links to the islands, the Kvarner is ideal for divers who want excellent walls and big-fish action without the crowds of the south.

Getting There

Fly into Rijeka Airport (RJK) on Krk island, or into Zagreb (ZAG) and Pula (PUY), then drive and take the short ferry hops. The islands of Cres, Krk, Rab and Lošinj are linked by frequent Jadrolinija ferries, and a rental car makes island touring straightforward.
