Diving Unije Island Caves

Site Overview

Unije Island Caves is a cave dive site in Kvarner Gulf, Croatia, set in the clear, fish-rich waters of the Adriatic Sea. The Unije island caves are submerged sea caves with sponges, glassfish and dramatic light effects. The caverns offer a taste of overhead-environment diving for suitably prepared divers. Sponges and cardinalfish fill the shadows, and the light beams at the entrance are photogenic. The surrounding reef continues the dive after the caves. Visibility is excellent, enhancing the light play inside. It is a scenic, less-dived site in the quiet Lošinj archipelago. Conditions are typical of the Croatian coast: visibility generally runs from 15 to 35 metres, the current is low and the water temperature ranges between 14 and 25 degrees Celsius depending on season and depth. The marine life is classic Adriatic, centred on loggerhead sponge, mediterranean cardinalfish, mediterranean moray, with the full community described below for those planning a dive. Because of its intermediate rating and the need for Advanced Open Water certification, Unije Island Caves is best approached with the right thermal protection and, where relevant, wreck or deep training.
