Vanua Levu, Fijis second-largest island, offers a compelling combination of intimate macro diving and thrilling mega-fauna encounters that few other Fijian destinations can match. Savusavu Bay house reefs provide calm, sheltered diving with exceptional macro life including pipefish, frogfish, seahorses, and the spectacular mandarinfish appearing at dusk. These house reefs are perfect for extended shallow dives, night diving, and underwater photography, with easy shore or boat access from the many resorts along the bay. Natewa Bay, on the eastern side of the island, has emerged as one of the Pacifics most exciting mega-fauna hotspots. The bay reaches depths exceeding 1000 metres, and its deep water brings nutrients that attract huge aggregations of bull sharks, tiger sharks, manta rays, and pilot whales. Baited shark dives in Natewa Bay have produced encounters with dozens of bull sharks and multiple tiger sharks in a single dive, rivaling or exceeding the famous Beqa shark dives. Beyond the sharks, the bay supports pristine coral reefs with excellent biodiversity. Kioa Island, off the eastern tip of Vanua Levu, offers untouched fringing reefs with schooling snapper, groupers, turtles, and occasional dugong sightings in the seagrass beds. Savusavu itself is a charming town with a marina, craft shops, and restaurants, serving as the logistical hub for diving throughout the region. The town provides easy access to the Namena Marine Reserve and Rainbow Reef across the Somosomo Strait. Vanua Levu is reached by domestic flight from Nadi or Suva to Labasa or Savusavu airports.
