Site Overview

Alacrity Rocks is a remarkable macro diving destination on the Great Astrolabe Reef, consisting of large boulder formations that create a complex underwater landscape supporting an extraordinary diversity of cryptic and photogenic marine species. The boulders, some several metres in diameter, are scattered across a sandy floor and covered in a rich tapestry of corals, sponges, and invertebrates that provide habitat for an impressive array of small marine creatures. Nudibranchs are the star attraction, with dozens of species recorded across the boulder surfaces, their brilliant warning colours making them irresistible subjects for underwater macro photographers. Seahorses cling to gorgonian branches and hydroid-covered rocks, their camouflaged bodies requiring patient searching to locate. Leaf scorpionfish perch motionless on rocky surfaces, their leaf-like appendages providing perfect camouflage against the encrusting organisms. Ghost pipefish drift among the gorgonians, their transparent bodies revealing internal organs and providing a unique photographic subject. Frogfish of various species perch on the boulder surfaces, their remarkable camouflage and patient ambush hunting strategy making them fascinating to observe. The crevices between the boulders provide shelter for moray eels, lobsters, and octopus, while the upper surfaces support hard coral growth that attracts butterflyfish and angelfish. The relatively shallow depth and calm conditions allow for extended bottom times, giving macro photographers the luxury of time needed to compose perfect shots. Alacrity Rocks is widely regarded as one of the best muck-style diving sites in Fiji, offering a contrast to the more typical wall and pinnacle diving found elsewhere on the Astrolabe Reef.

Dive Briefing

"Divers enter from the boat and descend to the boulder field at approximately 8 to 15 metres depth. The boulders are scattered across a sandy floor, each one covered in a different community of corals and invertebrates. Divers move slowly between the boulders, scanning the surfaces for cryptic species. Nudibranchs are found on sponge and hydroid growth, with different species preferring different food sources. Seahorses are located on specific gorgonian branches and hydroid-covered surfaces, often requiring guidance from an experienced spotter. Leaf scorpionfish are found on rocky surfaces where their camouflage blends perfectly with the surrounding encrusting organisms. Ghost pipefish drift among gorgonians, often in pairs. The crevices between boulders host moray eels, lobsters, and octopus. The shallow depth allows for extended bottom times of 60 minutes or more, giving photographers ample opportunity to compose shots. Divers should maintain careful buoyancy to avoid stirring sediment that could reduce visibility and disturb the delicate organisms on the boulder surfaces. Safety stops are conducted on the DSMB above the boulder field."
