Site Overview

Broken Stone is a spectacular dive site on the Great Astrolabe Reef characterised by dramatic coral-encrusted rock formations that create a labyrinth of swim-throughs, archways, and caverns adorned with prolific gorgonian sea fans and soft corals. The site takes its name from the fractured limestone structures that have been shaped by millennia of ocean currents and coral growth, creating an underwater landscape of extraordinary architectural beauty. Massive gorgonian sea fans extend from the rock walls like delicate fans, their intricate lattice patterns catching the filtered light that penetrates the swim-throughs. Soft corals in vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple drape every available surface, pulsing with the current as they filter plankton from the nutrient-rich Astrolabe Reef waters. Schools of anthias in brilliant yellow and purple surround the coral formations, creating a living cloud of colour that parts as divers swim through the spaces. Groupers lurk in the shadows of the larger caverns, their camouflaged bodies blending with the rock until they strike at passing prey. Moray eels of multiple species occupy crevices throughout the structure, with green morays and whitemouth morays both common. The swim-throughs provide dramatic light play as sunlight filters through gaps in the rock ceiling, creating natural spotlights that illuminate the coral gardens below. The outer wall of the formation drops to approximately 28 metres where larger gorgonians and black coral grow in the deeper shade. Broken Stone offers a compelling combination of topographic interest, rich coral coverage, and diverse marine life that makes it a highlight of any Kadavu diving itinerary.

Dive Briefing

"Divers enter from the boat and descend to the reef wall at approximately 10 to 15 metres depth. The broken rock formations are immediately visible, creating a series of swim-throughs and archways that invite exploration. Divers swim through the larger passages, observing the dense gorgonian coverage and the schools of anthias that fill the water around the coral formations. Light filtering through gaps in the rock creates dramatic illumination within the swim-throughs. Groupers shelter in the larger caverns, while moray eels extend their heads from crevices to monitor passing divers. The outer wall drops to approximately 28 metres where larger gorgonians, black coral, and barrel sponges create a different community adapted to lower light levels. The dive follows a meandering path through the formations, with the guide pointing out interesting macro life including nudibranchs, flatworms, and small shrimp that inhabit the coral branches. Careful buoyancy is essential to avoid contact with the delicate gorgonians and soft corals that line the swim-through walls. The dive typically lasts 45 to 55 minutes with a multi-level profile starting deeper and working shallower. Safety stops are conducted on the DSMB above the reef."
