Coral Gardens Ono Island – Kadavu Island and Great Astrolabe Reef

Site Overview

Coral Gardens on Ono Island is a pristine hard coral reef system within the Great Astrolabe Reef that showcases some of the healthiest and most visually stunning coral formations in all of Fiji. The site features expansive fields of table corals that create a layered underwater landscape, their flat surfaces providing shade for schools of fish and shelter for smaller reef organisms beneath. Massive staghorn thickets rise from the sandy floor like underwater forests, their branching structures hosting communities of small fish that dart between the coral arms for protection. The coral coverage is exceptional, with live coral covering over 80 percent of the substrate in many areas, a figure that stands in stark contrast to the degraded reefs found in many other parts of the world. Green turtles are frequently encountered grazing on algae growing on the coral substrate, their gentle presence adding a charismatic element to the coral landscape. Hawksbill turtles are also occasionally observed feeding on sponges growing in the deeper crevices between coral heads. Large parrotfish graze noisily on the coral substrate, producing the fine white sand that accumulates in patches between the coral formations. Angelfish in multiple species patrol the coral heads, their vibrant colours and distinctive patterns making them popular subjects for photographers. Butterflyfish, reliable indicators of reef health, are abundant throughout the site, their presence confirming the excellent condition of the coral ecosystem. The shallow depth profile allows natural light to illuminate the coral gardens, creating vivid colours that make wide-angle photography exceptionally rewarding.
