Naigoro Passage – Kadavu Island and Great Astrolabe Reef

Site Overview

Naigoro Passage is a thrilling drift dive through a reef passage on the Great Astrolabe Reef, where powerful tidal currents carry divers past massive gorgonian forests while grey reef sharks, whitetip sharks, and schooling barracuda patrol the nutrient-rich waters. The passage cuts through the outer barrier reef, channelling oceanic water through a relatively narrow corridor that concentrates marine life and creates ideal conditions for filter-feeding organisms. The gorgonian sea fans at Naigoro Passage are among the largest in Fiji, with individual fans exceeding two metres in diameter, their intricate lattice structures oriented perpendicular to the current to maximise plankton capture. Grey reef sharks cruise against the current along the passage walls, their streamlined bodies designed to exploit the flow for efficient hunting. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy ledges in the deeper sections, emerging to patrol when the current brings prey within range. Schools of barracuda form characteristic tight formations in the mid-water, their silver bodies creating a shimmering curtain that parts and reforms as predators pass through. Giant trevally hunt along the reef edge, their powerful bursts of speed sending smaller fish scattering in all directions. The passage walls are thickly encrusted with soft corals, hard corals, and gorgonians that create a colourful tapestry of marine life. The drift dive experience at Naigoro is one of the most exciting offered on Kadavu, combining the thrill of being carried by strong current with the visual spectacle of abundant large marine life.
