Savusavu Bay House Reefs offer some of the most accessible and rewarding macro diving in all of Fiji. Located right along the waterfront of the charming town of Savusavu on Vanua Levu, these sheltered house reefs provide calm conditions perfect for training dives, photography sessions, and relaxed exploration. The shallow reef system stretches along the bay with a mix of hard coral patches, soft coral gardens, and sandy rubble areas that harbour an extraordinary diversity of small and unusual marine life. Divers can expect to encounter mandarinfish performing their elaborate mating dance at dusk, tiny pygmy seahorses clinging to gorgonian fans, flamboyant frogfish camouflaged against the reef, and ghost pipefish drifting among the coral heads. The variety of micro-habitats within the bay means that every dive reveals something new, from ribbon eels peering out of their burrows to nudibranchs displaying vivid colours on the coral substrate. The protected nature of the bay ensures minimal current and excellent visibility, making these reefs ideal for photographers who need time and stability to compose their shots. Multiple entry points along the shore allow divers to explore different sections of the reef system, each with its own character and resident wildlife. The house reefs also serve as an excellent orientation dive for newcomers to Fiji who want to acclimatise to local conditions before venturing out to more exposed sites.

Dive Briefing

"Descend gently from the shore entry and allow your eyes to adjust to the ambient light as you survey the reef landscape ahead. The house reefs of Savusavu Bay are best explored slowly, moving along the reef crest and slope while scanning every surface for hidden macro critters. Your guide will point out pygmy seahorses on specific gorgonian fans that have been mapped over many seasons. Continue along the slope where patches of sand and rubble provide habitat for frogfish, ghost pipefish, and the occasional garden eel colony. Keep your buoyancy trimmed close to neutral as the shallow depths mean coral is always near. As you approach the deeper sections around twelve to fifteen metres, look for ribbon eels extending their colourful heads from burrows in the reef structure. The mandarinfish gathering at dusk is a highlight, with pairs performing their spectacular mating ritual among the coral branches. Take your time to observe the intricate interactions between cleaner shrimp and their client fish at cleaning stations scattered throughout the reef. Navigation is straightforward along the shoreline, and the calm conditions allow extended bottom times for photography enthusiasts. Ascend slowly with a safety stop in the shallows where additional macro life can often be spotted during the final minutes of your dive."
