Split Rock – Vanua Levu – Savusavu & Natewa Bay

Site Overview

Split Rock is one of Savusavu's most iconic dive sites, named for the dramatic fissure that splits a large volcanic rock formation creating a unique underwater landscape of narrow canyons, swim-throughs, and vertical walls. Located just a short boat ride from Savusavu harbour, this site combines geological drama with abundant marine life in a compact area that rewards multiple visits. The rock formation rises from a sandy bottom at around twenty-five metres to within five metres of the surface, creating a submerged pinnacle that attracts pelagic species from the surrounding open water. The signature split creates a narrow channel through the rock that divers can swim through in single file, with walls on either side covered in colourful soft corals, sponges, and gorgonian fans that thrive in the current that flows through the gap. Barracuda schools patrol the upper reaches of the pinnacle, their streamlined forms silhouetted against the bright surface light. Grey reef sharks cruise the deeper perimeter, while giant trevally hunt along the reef edge. The exterior walls of the rock formation are encrusted with hard and soft corals that provide habitat for an incredible diversity of reef fish, moray eels, and invertebrates. Lionfish perch on ledges with their flowing fins, while cleaner wrasse operate busy stations that attract clients from throughout the reef community. The site works well in various current conditions, as the split itself creates interesting flow patterns that concentrate plankton and attract filter-feeding organisms to the rock walls.
