Provence and the Calanques form the wild, limestone heart of Mediterranean France, where the white cliffs of Marseille and Cassis plunge straight into the sea as dramatic walls, caves and coralligenous drop-offs. The Calanques National Park protects this coastline, home to barracuda, groupers and red gorgonians, while the harbours of Marseille and Toulon hide a remarkable collection of wrecks, from the cargo ships Chaouen and Liban to the artificial reef of the Dalton. The islands of Frioul and the Île des Embiez add sheltered, clear-water diving close to shore. This region is the cradle of French recreational diving and remains one of the most varied, blending pristine natural reefs with a century of maritime history. It suits every level, from the shallow training ledges of the Calanques to deep, advanced wreck and cave dives.

Getting There

Fly into Marseille Provence (MRS), the main gateway, or drive the A7/A50 autoroutes. The region’s harbours at Marseille (Vieux Port), Cassis, Toulon and the Île des Embiez are the dive launch points, all linked by TER trains, buses and a short ferry to the Frioul and Embiez islands.
