Mecklenburg-Vorpommern holds the wild, unspoiled Baltic coastline of north-eastern Germany, where lagoon systems, chalk cliffs and a string of islands offer some of the best-preserved medieval wreck dives in Europe. The Darß-Zingst peninsula guards the Darßer Kogge, a 14th-century merchant cog lying in just 6-10 m of water and considered one of the finest preserved wooden wrecks anywhere. On Rügen, the chalk cliffs of Kap Arkona and the Königsstuhl continue underwater as white walls draped in life, while Usedom’s piers at Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf teem with fish and macro subjects. Wismar Bay and the Greifswalder Bodden add scattered Hanseatic timbers and shallow training water. This is a region of big skies, rich history and gentle diving: ideal for underwater archaeologists, photographers and families, with the Hanseatic towns of Rostock and Stralsund adding culture above the water.

Getting There

Fly into Rostock (RLG) or Berlin (BER) and drive the A19/A20; trains run to Rostock, Stralsund, Binz and Usedom. Dive bases spread from Zingst and Wismar along the coast to Rügen, Hiddensee and the Usedom seaside resorts, linked by regional trains and ferries.
