The Schleswig-Holstein coast of the Baltic Sea (Ostsee) is the wreck-and-wall heart of German cold-water diving, where low-salinity, kelp-fringed water hides hundreds of historic shipwrecks and dramatic drop-offs within easy reach of Hamburg and Lübeck. The island of Fehmarn is a magnet for divers, with the current-swept Fehmarnsund Bridge, the steep wall of Staberhuk and a remarkable scatter of wrecks from the wooden schooner Martha to the steamer Cimbria and the shallow U-11 submarine. Kiel Fjord shelters huge wrecks such as the light cruiser SMS Berlin and the research vessel Olympia, while Eckernförde Bay and Flensburg Fjord add midget submarines, wreck fields and the occasional angelshark. The Baltic here is a training and exploration paradise: visibility is modest but the history is unmatched, and the tidy harbours of Heiligenhafen, Lübeck and Travemünde make logistics simple. Getting There

Fly into Hamburg (HAM) or Lübeck (LBC) and drive the A1 and coastal roads; Lübeck and Kiel are the main rail hubs. The dive bases cluster around Fehmarn, Kiel, Heiligenhafen, Eckernförde, Flensburg and Travemünde, all linked by regional trains and ferries.
