Schinias Bay (Athens) | Gentle Macro Reef
Site Overview
Schinias Bay, near Marathon on the eastern Attic coast, is a gentle, shallow training ground where the seagrass meadows form a nursery for some of the Saronic’s most charming macro life. The slope begins at the shoreline and rolls to about 12 m, crossing sand and Posidonia seagrass that shelters pipefish, seahorses in summer and a busy community of wrasse and octopus. The sheltered bay keeps conditions forgiving for new divers, while the clear-enough water makes the small life easy to appreciate. It is where many Athens divers take their first breaths underwater, and where experienced divers return for an easy, low-stress macro dive close to the city. Quiet, reliable and full of small wonders, Schinias is the gentle flip-side of the region’s walls and wrecks. Schinias Bay (Athens) sits within Aegean – Saronic Gulf (Athens & Islands) and is best described as a reef and training dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 1 m down to 12 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Seahorse, Pipefish, Common Octopus, Nudibranch, Wrasse. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.
Dive Briefing
"The group kits up on the beach and wades in, gaining buoyancy before descending to the sloping reef at 3–6 m. The guide leads a slow tour along the seagrass edge, pointing out pipefish and seahorses and reminding divers to keep fins up to protect the grass. With a maximum depth of 12 m the dive is long and relaxed, ideal for skills practice or macro photography. The ascent and exit are made back to the beach, where kit is rinsed. Buoyancy over the seagrass is the key skill, and a torch helps reveal creatures in the rock shadows. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the reef and training features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Schinias Bay is perfect for beginners, training dives and discover-scuba experiences, with an easy entry and a maximum depth of only 12 m. It is also a favourite of macro photographers and anyone who prefers small subjects to big walls. Because it is shallow and sheltered, it suits nervous divers and children building confidence. Experienced divers use it as a relaxing dive between more demanding sites. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
