About Grenada – Wrecks (Southwest & St George's Harbour)

Grenada is the shipwreck capital of the Caribbean, and the fleet assembled off the southwest coast and inside St George's Harbour is the reason: a burned 600-foot ocean liner standing upright at 50 m, a deliberately-scuttled cargo ship in a swimming-pool 16 m, a 1980s freighter from shallow bow to dark stern, and a purpose-prepped modern wreck you can tour room by room. Few islands anywhere can stack this many complete, diveable, colonised hulls in one day's sailing. Grenada sits on the southern edge of the Caribbean plate, where a volcanic core and a shelf that drops away steeply from the southwest coast put walls, pinnacles and wrecks within a short boat ride of every base. The wreck dive season is the calendar itself - the harbour hulls stay diveable in almost any weather, and the Bianca C's deep silhouette rewards every return as the coral crust thickens. Around them circle the other names divers cross the Atlantic for: the freighter Shakeem on her side in the MPA, the island's little tug and lighter wrecks off Carriacou, and the half-a-dozen hulls, from the Hildur to the Persia's reef leftovers, that locals still name from memory even where the sea has taken most of the structure. Trade winds blow almost constant over the Caribbean, and it is their lulls and builds that set the daily diving schedule around Grenada. Water temperature stays in the high twenties year-round and the island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the dive boats run twelve months a year.

    Getting There

Every wreck on this list sits within twenty minutes of the southwest harbour bases, and the whole fleet is boat-only from the St George's-area moorings and Grand Anse launches. Operators build fixed two-wreck and three-wreck circuits around the harbour hulls and slot the Bianca C as a dedicated deep morning when the surface lies flat. Wreck-penetration specialists should book with shops advertising wreck-guided trips, since the open rooms and hold mouths differ wildly in what they allow. The practical rhythm of a wreck week is depth discipline: the deep liners and freighters take a whole dive and a surface interval, so most divers pair one deep hull with a shallow coral-swamped wreck like the Veronica L and leave penetration for a dedicated, properly certified day.
