    Site Overview

The Veronica L is everything the Bianca C is not: shallow, warm, easy and utterly covered in life. This 131-foot cargo freighter was scuttled on purpose in the 1990s and now sits upright in St George's Harbour in about 16 m. Every surface is a coral garden — fans, sponges and hard coral on the rails, with the hold entrances acting as fish aggregators: barge-loads of grunts, snapper, sergeant majors and the odd turtle resting along the hull. The deck lies at 12-14 m and the sand at 16 m — a full-wreck dive fits one tank at relaxed no-deco numbers. The site sits in Wrecks — Southwest & St George's Harbour, one of Grenada's core dive areas, with water at 27-29 °C and typical visibility of 15-25 m. Minutes from the St George's harbour steps — most southwest boats include her on every wreck tour. She may be small next to the Bianca C, but ask most divers what they remember of Grenada and the Veronica L is in the answer. Trade winds blow almost constant over the Caribbean, and it is their lulls and builds that set the daily diving schedule around Grenada. Water temperature stays in the high twenties year-round and the island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the dive boats run twelve months a year.

    Dive Briefing

“Drop onto the bow and walk the wreck aft along the deck, pausing at the hold openings and the winch structures; the shallow depth makes the whole ship a single comfortable loop. Depth management: plan the dive to a maximum of 16 metres and turn early. The sheltered Caribbean side is usually glassy, while the Atlantic-facing south coast runs with the trade-wind current that makes its drift dives so special. Vertical ascent off the stern into the harbour shallows with a safety stop under the boats. Newer divers can comfortably dive this site, staying within the range flagged by the guide. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral. Local operators hold the final say on which sites run each day, because a shift in wind or swell can change conditions between two bays.”

    Safety & Hazards

    • Fishing lines and traps around the harbour wrecks
    • Silty sand in the hold entrances if fins are high
    • Light boat traffic in the channel — surface alert
    • Cold thermocline drips on long dives
    • Overhead-temptation: holds look inviting but need wreck training

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Open Water divers get a world-class wreck experience here with zero depth pressure — arguably the best first-wreck dive in the Caribbean. The 10-16 m range suits divers of most certification levels. Only properly trained wreck divers should consider penetration here; everyone else stays outside the hull. Night dives on the Veronica L swap the shoals for hunters — octopus, moray and spiny lobster come out on the hull. The crevices, wreck rooms and sculpture plinths hold the usual Caribbean small life - damsels, blennies, shrimps and the occasional rare frogfish or black seahorse. Night dives on the shallow reefs and harbour wrecks turn up a completely different community of hunters.

    For Non-Divers

St. George's is easy to enjoy without a cylinder, and most operators run snorkel trips on the same bays. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral.
